A Brief Introduction to Chongqing Normal University

Chongqing Normal University (hereafter as “CNU”), founded in 1954, is a full-time comprehensive institution of higher education under the leadership of Chongqing Municipal Government of P. R. China. CNU covers over 190 hectares (2688 mu) and is located in Shapingba District, the cultural and educational district of Chongqing. CNU is a higher education institution authorized to award Master’s and Bachelor’s degree with the approval of the Degree Awarding commission of the State Council, P. R. China. Currently, there are 17 colleges, 75 bachelor’s degree programs, 24 first-level discipline of authorized master degree programs, 14 professional authorized master degree programs, 1 first-level discipline of authorized doctoral degree programs，authorized secondary vocational master’s degree, authorized advanced teachers professional master degree of literature, science, economics, management, art, physical education, etc., forming an educational system which is able to train postgraduates, undergraduates, associates and overseas students. And Chongqing Normal University was granted doctor degree institute by Chinese education government in 2018. Currently, there are over 25,000 full time undergraduate students,4000 graduate students, 570 international students, and over 2000 teachers including more than 1000 professors and doctors.

CNU is entitled by the Ministry of Education，P.R. China to recruit overseas students. It was designated as one of the first Chinese Language Educational Centres by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. And it was awarded the National Teaching Base for International Promotion of Chinese (Chongqing) by Confucius Institute Headquarters in 2012. The university, featured in teachers’ education, has developed into a higher education institution of multi-subjects involving science and liberal arts. A fairly complete teachers’ education system has been formed including pre-school education, primary school education, middle school education, higher education, continuing education, vocational and technical education, special education, and teachers training for Chinese language and culture education.

Grasping the tendency of educational globalization, CNU perseveres in the mode of “open university” and is the host university of Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, Chongqing Municipal Mayor Scholarship. The university has successively established cooperation and exchange relationship by various forms, as jointed education, jointed scientific research, and mutual visit, with education institutions in over 30 countries such as USA, UK，Russia, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia Canada, Sweden, etc. Actively promote the international education of Chinese language, the university was awarded as the "Confucius Institute Advanced Chinese Cooperation Agency" three times by the Headquarter of Confucius Institute. It has organized "Confucius Institute" and "Chinese Teachers College" in the United States, Britain, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and other countries, which realizes the layout of the Confucius Institute in five continents.  

CNU attaches much importance to overseas students’ education and administration in a way of classified teaching and human-based management, insisting on classification teaching and humanization management. International Students Office enjoys much popularity with overseas students as their home in China, and gets the widely acclaimed by them. CNU provide international students a better integration of education, carrying out the convergence management and teaching. CNU took the lead in Chongqing to set up International College of Chinese Language and Culture, providing better education and administration for Chinese language training students. The collegeoffers favorable learning environment for overseas students as much as possible with small-sized classes and special tutoring.

Information for Prospective Overseas Students

Approved by the Ministry of Education, P.R. China, Chongqing Normal University (hereafter as CNU) enrolls overseas students every year. Short-term programs are available year around. There are two semesters for both long-term training and degree programs students (Fall semester: September to January; Spring Semester: February to July). Students who want to study at CNU should apply at least one month in advance.

Ⅰ. Length of the Programs:

1. Short-Term Training Programs: 2 to 10 weeks.

2. Long-Term Training Programs: one semester to two semesters.

3. Undergraduate programs: 3-6 years.

5. Postgraduate programs: 2-5 years.

Ⅲ. Admission Requirements:

1. Applicants for Long-term and Short-term Training Programs  

Age: Between 18 and 55, in sound health.

2. Applicants for Undergraduate Study

Age: Between 18 and 25.

Language Proficiency: A certified high school diploma for bachelor’s degree applicants is required, having achieved the required level of New HSK (the Chinese Proficiency Test) level 4 or above. Malaysia Chinese senior high school graduates need not submit this kind of achievements.

3. Applicants for Postgraduate Study

Age: Between 18 and 35.

Requirements: A certified bachelor degree for Master’s degree applicants is required; two letters of recommendation by associate professors or professors (original copy or scanned copy), having achieved the required level of New HSK (the Chinese Proficiency Test) level 5 or above.

Ⅳ. Application Procedures:

1.Applicants outside of China shall contact the International Students Office, at Chongqing Normal University or visit http://international.cqnu.edu.cn to download and fill in Admission Application Form in Chongqing Normal University.

2.Applicants should register on the Chongqing Normal University international students online application website ( https://foreignstudent.cqnu.edu.cn/).

3. Documents applicants submitted:

(1) Chongqing Normal University Application form

(2) Highest diploma attained or proof of study (notarized photocopy).Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.

(3) Transcripts of the most advanced studies (notarized photocopy).

(4) Study plan (written in Chinese or English).

(5) Two letters of recommendation. Applicants for master degree studies shall provide two letters of recommendation by associate professors or professors. Applicants who are students currently studying at Chongqing Normal University shall provide a recommendation letter from the International Administration Office or a teacher in Chongqing Normal University.

(6)HSK and HSKK copy( bachelor applicants are required HSK4 copy, Master applicants are required HSK5 copy)  

(7) Copy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (for applicants who are currently not studying at Chongqing Normal University) completed Physical Examination Form for Foreigners (available at http://international.cqnu.edu.cn) together with the original copy (lab copy of AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, type B Hepatitis and X-ray) of the health examination from hospitals with red stamp.

(8) Copy of passport.

(9) No criminal record certification.

(10) Bank deposit certificate ( local currency no less than 25,000 RMB )

4. Applicants shall post all the application documents and registration fee RMB 400 to the International Students Office of CNU. (Application Form for Admission can be sent by e-mail.) After approval of all the documents, the International Students Office will send Admission Notice and Visa Application Form to the applicants, with which the applicants shall go to the Chinese embassy or consulate for an X Visa (students’ Visa).

5. Applicants shall come to the International Students Office of CNU for registering on the required date and hand in all the necessary documents for admission. The documents needed are Admission Notice, Passport, JW202 Form, Physical Examination Record for Foreigners, 4 one-inch passport pictures. All tuition fees must be paid before the semester begins.

6. Overseas students who transfer from another Chinese University to Chongqing Normal University shall finish the Application Form for Admission and send the form, a transferringcertificate by the previous school, and other required application documents to the International Students Office, Chongqing Normal University.

A. Chinese Government Scholarship

(2) Applicants should not be a registered student in Chinese universities at the time of application; or be a graduate from Chinese universities for more than one year.

(3) Applicants for master degree studies must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35；Applicants for Bachelor degree studies must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 25

4. Application Materials

Applicants are required to submit application on the website of China Scholarship Council and the website of study in Chongqing Normal University . All the application documents should be printed and send to International Office of Chongqing Normal University in triplicate. Application materials will not be returned regardless of the result of application. The applicants must fill in and provide the following materials truly and correctly. (3)Highest diploma (notarized photocopy). If applicants are university students or already employed, they should also provide documents of being university students or on-post employees. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

(4)Applicants for master’s degree shall provide notarized transcripts for bachelor’s degree. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.

(5)A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words).

(6)Applicants shall submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors.

(7)Applicants for music are requested to submit one cassette recording of the applicants’ own work. Applicants for fine arts must submit six color photographs of personal works (two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).

(8)Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (printed by Chinese quarantine authority) filled in English. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. Students who win the scholarship will also be required to take physical examination when they arrive in China in September, 2020. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration while determining the time to take the medical examination.

B. Confucius Institute Scholarship

1. Application time:  

10^th April ( Four weeks programs in July )

10^th May (Programs begin from September )

10^th September (Four weeks programs begins in December )

10^th November(Programs begin from March of next year)

2.Eligibility & Categories

Application is open to applicant who holds a non-Chinese citizenship, aged between 18 and 35 years, in good character and excellent learning. (Applicant currently holding a Chinese language teaching position must not exceed the age limit of 45；Applicant for undergraduate program must not exceed the age limit of 25.)

2.1 Scholarship for Master Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students

Enrollment starts in September 2020. This category provides a scholarship for 2 academic years. Applicants must possess a bachelor degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 5), and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon completion of study from designated working institutions is preferred.

2.2 Scholarship for Bachelor Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students

Enrollment starts in September 2020. This category provides a scholarship for 4 academic years. Applicants must possess a high school degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 4), and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level).

2.3 Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study (Students)

This category provides a scholarship for 11 months. Applicants must not be in china at the time of applying. Enrollment starts in September 2020.

2.3.1 Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

Applicant must have a minimum score of 270 in HSK Test (Level 3), and 60 in HSKK test (Beginner Level), and possess HSKK result.

2.3.2 Chinese Literature、Chinese History、Chinese Philosophy

Applicant must have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 4), and 60 in HSKK test  (Intermediate Level).

2.3.3 Chinese Study

Applicant must have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and applicant who possesses HSKK result will have the priority.

1.4Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students

Enrollment starts in September 2020 or March 2021.This category provides a scholarship for 5 months. Applicants who already have X1 or X2 visa will be refused.

2.5.Four-week Program

Enrollment starts in June 2020 or December 2020. This category provides a scholarship for 4 weeks. Applicants who already have X1 or X2 visa will be refused.

2.5.1 Chinese Study + Home Visit

Applicants must possess HSK result and should have a desire to want to visit Chinese family. Applicants must apply in group through their Confucius Institute. A group can only have between 10--15 applicants.

2.5.2 Confucius Institute Special Four-week Project

Applicants must possess HSK result, and must apply in group through their Confucius Institute. A group can only have between 10--15 applicants.

For“Chinese Bridge” (Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students) Prize Winners. 3.Scholarship Coverage

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (except four-week program students) and comprehensive medical insurance package.

We provide free accommodation for Confucius Institute Scholarship students.  Normally 2-3 students stay in a room.

Living allowance is granted on monthly basis. The allowance criteria per person is: Undergraduate student，One-Academic-Year Students, One-Semester Students: RMB 2,500 per month; MTCSOL: RMB 3,000 per month.

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased in accordance with the relevant regulations for international students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The insurance packages are as follows: Four-week program students- RMB 160 per person; One-Semester Students- 400 per person; One-Academic-Year Students and above - 800 per person yearly.

4.Application Procedure

4.1 For all applicants, please log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (http://cis.chinese.cn) from March 1st 2019 to register. Applicants should also register on the Chongqing Normal University international students online application website ( http://foreignstudent.cqnu.edu.cn:9088/?tdsourcetag=s_pcqq_aiomsg).

☆Applicants for MTCSOL Scholarship are required to provide 2 reference letters either from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide an employment agreement or related documents from the designated teaching institution are preferred.

☆Applicant who is currently working in a Chinese language teaching related field shall provide an employment certification and reference letters from the agency.

☆Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.

4.2 Recommending institutions reviews materials and recommends applicants who meet the criteria to our university.

4.3 Our university reviews materials, interview applicants and pre-admits applicants on a competitive selection based process.

4.4 Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. Normally, the admission results will be announced 2 months before the term begins.

C. Chongqing Municipal Mayor Scholarship

1. Application time: March1 to April20  

2. Basic information of scholarship

The coverage of scholarship should be not longer than the normal years for undergraduate/ graduate program.

Ⅷ. Completion of Education and Graduation

Upon the completion of requirements needed to fulfill a program and passing all required courses, overseas students are eligible for the following:

1.Short-Term/Long-Term training students will be granted a Certificate of Completion of his/her particular program.  

2.Degree candidates who have successfully defended his/her dissertation will be granted related Graduation Certificate and Degree Diploma.  

Ⅸ. Tourism Policy

Chongqing is an ancient and cultural city with unique city architecture on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in Southwestern China. It is extraordinarily rich in tourism resources. Free trips may be arranged by the University within the city limits. During summer vacations or after the completion of your education on campus, group tours can be scheduled by the university with students’ proposals and all expenses incurred will be the personal responsibility of participants.

Fees for International Studentsof Chongqing Normal University

Ⅰ. Tuition (Chinese currency):

(1) Short-term Training: 4,000RMB for one month.  

(2) Long-term Training of Chinese Language and Culture: 7,000RMB per semester, 14,000RMB per academic year.

(3) Long-term Training of Other Majors: Major training programs are paid according to different majors.

(4) Undergraduate Programs:

 14,000 RMB per academic year for liberal arts programs

 16,000 RMB per academic year for science, engineering, economic, management programs

 21,000 RMB per academic year for arts and physical education programs

(5) Postgraduate Programs:  

18,000RMB peracademic year for liberal arts programs  

20,000RMB peracademic year for science, engineering, economic, management programs  

27,000RMB peracademic year for arts and physical education programs  

Ⅱ. Accommodation Fee (Chinese currency):

Apartments on the new campus (with a bedroom and a bathroom, internet interface,2 students share one room): 5400RMB per academic year per person.

3. Special Explanation

(1) For CNU scholarship students who must live in the internationalstudents apartment.  

(2) Those who intend to live in on-campus apartments should reserve 40 days in advance.

Ⅲ.Fee for Meals

Students can have meals in the Dinning Halls for Chinese students. The students can also cook for themselves. On average, it costs about 30-50RMB per person per day.

Ⅳ. Text Books and Miscellaneous Fee：Fee for text books depends on the class schedule.

Ⅴ.Application Fee: 400RMB, which should be sent to CNU International Students Office together with application form and other required documents for admission.

Ⅵ. Visa Fee: 400RMB for X1 visa (180 days to one year), and 168RMB for X2 visa(less than 180 days). In order to submit all the documents for visa, applicants also need body check in designated Hospital and visa photo in Chongqing, which may cost 400RMB and 30RMB, respectively.

Ⅶ. Insurance Fee: 800RMB for a year. All the long-term international students (half year and above) will buy medical insurance. The reimbursement is subject to Chinese Insurance laws and regulation.

Ⅷ. The tuition fee and enrollment fee are non-refundable. Fees are subject to CNU change.
