College of Liberal Arts, formerly known as the College of Literature and Journalism from 2004 to 2009, is one of the earliest departments founded by Chongqing Normal University in 1954. The College of Liberal Arts has 116 staffs, among which there are 105 academic teachers, including 36 professors, 27 associate professors, and 67 with doctoral degrees, 4 part-time doctoral supervisors from Sichuan University, Macau University, and Shaanxi Normal University, and 41 master's supervisors.
Many teachers of the college have been honored with the national or provincial (municipal) talent titles. One teacher was entitled "Special Government Allowance of the State Council"; one teacher was selected in "New Century Talent Supporting Project by Ministry of Education", and 5 teachers were entitled with "Liang JiangScholars by Chongqing Municipality" and "Outstanding Mid-Aged Expert of Chongqing Municipality " and 7 experts are members of national academic association councils. The college is a pilot unit of the Comprehensive Reform of Teaching Quality of Ministry of Education. The major, “Chinese language and literature” has been ranked in national level as a featured major. It has 3 key disciplines in Chongqing Municipality (The 11th Five-Years Period), 4 municipal-level excellent courses, 1 municipal-level key research center of Humanities & Social Sciences, 2 high quality courses for graduate students, and 2 municipal-level Excellent Teaching team. During the "12th Five-Year" period, the "Chinese language and literature" discipline was rated as a key discipline in Chongqing, and it is also one of the three authorized disciplines set up by the university in the period of applying for PhD authorization.
The College has set up four full-time undergraduate majors: Chinese Language and Literature, Secretary Science, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, as well as Film and Television Literature. The College has begun to recruit master degree candidate since 1986, and in 2005 the College obtained the first-class discipline master's degree authorization of Chinese Language and Literature. Then, its eight second-class disciplines began to recruit students. Besides, it also recruited students of Curriculum and Pedagogy (Chinese) and MTCSOL at the same time.
The college takes "The Innovative Experimentation Area of Excellent Second School Chinese Teacher Training Mode" as the grasps, and takes the opportunity of the “Comprehensive Reform” of Ministry of Education as a turning point, and takes advantages of both the "Excellent Teacher Training Program" and the "Liberal Arts Talent Program", and carries out the construction of the national featured major of the Chinese language and literature. The college has launched a cooperative project with primary and secondary schools in many ways, and has built a “Innovative Experimentation Area of Excellent Second School Chinese Teacher Training Mode" and a "Training for Second School Chinese Backbone Teachers in Middle and Western China", "Chongqing middle school Backbone Teachers (Chinese) Training" and other projects.
In recent years, the College has hosted and completed more 31 National Social Science Projects (including 1 significant bidding project and 1 key bidding project), 23 Humanities & Social Sciences projects funded by ministry of education, 1 special projects from the Ministry of education, 4 projects from the Chinese Ancient Book Collation Committee, 3 projects from National Language Work Committee, 4 international exchange fund projects, 2 significant and 38 key Chongqing municipal social science planning projects (including 3 Major entrusted projects); and have made domestic representative academic achievements of significant influence. Among which The Development of Modern Chinese Literature and the Anarchism was selected in the "National Philosophy and Social Science Library" in 2002, Cultural Interpretation of China's Liberal Arts Policy won the first prize of the outstanding achievements of social sciences in Chongqing. There are 2 kinds of continuous publications such as Studies of the Anti-Japanese War History, and Collection of Regional Culture and Literature. 3 books of Research and Practice Series of Excellent Teacher Training. They have published more than 10 textbooks, more than 50 academic monographs and more than 1000 academic articles. Among them, nearly 200 articles have been published in journals with great influence factors such as Social Science in China, Literary Review, Studies of the Chinese Language, Literary Heritage, Literature & Art Studies, Modern Chinese Literature Studies,Contention of Literature and Art, and have won 8 social sciences outstanding achievements in Chongqing.
The College has conducted frequent foreign academic exchanges, hosted a lot of domestic and international academic conferences. Since 2002, the Annual Academic Symposium on Regional Culture and Literature and the International Symposium on Culture and Literature of Anti-Japanese War have formed an influential brand. It also held the second session of Chinese Adverbs Symposium, Contemporary Literary Theory and Criticism Practice Symposium & Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Literary and Artistic Theories Council in 2014. The college assigned and accepted visiting personnel at home and abroad actively, and been keeping contact with universities and scientific research institutions from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Russia, Britain, France, and America etc., as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Through these, the college succeeded to build professional exchange platforms and to carry out extensive cooperation in the aspects of academic research and talent cultivation.
The college attaches great importance to talent cultivation, implements quality education in an all-round way, consolidating the professional foundation of students, and improving the level of practical teaching skills. Over the past 60 years, more than 20,000 outstanding graduates have been taught here. Some of them have become the backbone of primary and secondary schools, universities and government departments. In the past three years, the students have won national awards from the National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technological Works, the National Normal Students Teaching Skills Competition, and some other Challenge Cup competitions, and more than 100 papers and academic articles published in the provincial publications. The college actively develops students' international vision, participates in the working of Confucius Institutes, and successively assigned more than 30 Chinese volunteer teachers all over the world.
At present, all the faculty of the College are actively engaged in the teaching and scientific research, dedicating themselves to the talent cultivation and making arduous efforts to create a high-level college which is based on the West Part, facing the whole country, and exploiting overseas.
